Jonathan Derek Bush, 21, a Black male, was found shot to death on the morning of August 31, 2025, inside the Lance Apartments on the 4800 block of El Camino Avenue in Carmichael. Deputies were called around 7 a.m. after a family member requested a welfare check; bullet holes were visible from outside, and three men in their 20s were discovered dead inside with firearms near their bodies.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office later obtained surveillance video via warrant and located a key witness who helped piece together what happened. According to the sheriff's account, one of the decedents was being robbed by two other men; during the struggle, one robber fatally shot the victim, and then a resident of the apartment fired, killing both armed assailants.
Authorities identified the third man who died as Jonathan Derek Bush of Antelope. Separate reporting named the other two deceased men as Zavion Larue Dorsey, 22, and Wayne Douglas Doerr, 24. The Sheriff's Office said all four involved were legally prohibited from possessing guns.
A fourth person, an 18-year-old resident of the apartment identified by authorities as Jaylen Davis, was detained at the scene and later arrested on firearm-related charges. Investigators and the district attorney's office said he would not face homicide charges based on the evidence that the shootings occurred during a botched robbery and in self-defense. Detectives continued to process the scene and review video evidence while asking anyone with information to contact the sheriff's office.
