In the late summer of 2026, the community of Itta Bena, Mississippi, was struck by a violent tragedy that claimed the life of a young man. Demetri Swinney, a 28-year-old resident, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The incident marked the fifth homicide in Leflore County for the year, a somber statistic for the local community.
