Summary based on 1 source
Israel Joseph Luna was 17 years old when he died on Friday, October 23, 2015, in East Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died of stab wounds in the 5000 block of Whittier Boulevard. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report described him as "a 17-year-old Latino" and gave a short account of how he was found. "Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies were called about 11:10 p.m., said Lt. Steve Jauch. They found Luna lying in the street, next to the curb, with a stab wound in his upper torso." He "was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m., according to coroner's records."

The Times reported that "Jauch said investigators don't have any suspect information, nor a motive." It did not say who called deputies, whether Israel was alone, or whether anyone was seen running or driving away. He was still a high-school-aged teenager, and the stabbing happened late on a Friday night, but the record does not say where he had been that evening or who he had been with.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he was found, almost nothing about Israel Joseph Luna has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found that clearly belongs to him, and no follow-up news story appears to have been published. Searches for his name are crowded with other people who share it, including a Texas filmmaker and a 19-year-old who died in 2021, none of whom are connected to this death. He surely had family, classmates and friends who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record.

The Times described the block where he was found: "The block where Luna was stabbed is in a business area, with thrift stores, discount stores, fast-food restaurants and a medical clinic." Late on a Friday night, some of those businesses may still have been open, and people working or shopping nearby may have seen something without realizing its importance.

East Los Angeles is an unincorporated community just east of the city of Los Angeles, policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department rather than the LAPD. It has long been one of the centers of Mexican American life in Southern California. Whittier Boulevard is its main commercial street, lined with small shops, restaurants and offices, and it is known for its history as a cruising strip for lowrider car clubs.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Israel Joseph Luna could be found in news archives or public records. More than ten years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was on or near the 5000 block of Whittier Boulevard late on the night of October 23, 2015, or who knew a 17-year-old named Israel Luna and saw him that evening, may hold information that could help investigators. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
