Summary based on 1 source
Jaime Rangel was 21 years old when he was found dead on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, in the Rio Hondo River wash in the western San Gabriel Valley. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died of stab wounds in the 9100 block of Garvey Avenue, an address the coroner listed under El Monte. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a case of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report said that Rangel, "a 21-year-old male Latino, was found dead in the Rio Hondo River wash beneath Garvey Avenue at Lee Avenue in Rosemead." It added that he "had suffered multiple "sharp-force" injuries to the upper torso." The report said that "homicide detectives are seeking the public's help in solving the case," and it gave the number for the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, (323) 890-5500.

That is nearly all the public record holds. The report does not say who found him, how long he had been in the wash, or whether he was killed there or somewhere nearby and left beneath the bridge. The location, a concrete flood channel below a busy road, suggests that he may have been out of sight of passing drivers, but the record does not describe the scene.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Jaime Rangel has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. Jaime Rangel is also a fairly common name, shared by a professional boxer, a Texas man who died in 2013 and many others across the country, none of whom has any connection to this death.

Because so little was released, the basic circumstances remain unknown. The record does not say whether he was stabbed during a fight or a robbery, attacked by a stranger or by someone he knew, or what time of day he was hurt. It does not say whether anyone saw what happened, or whether detectives ever identified a suspect or a motive.

The Rio Hondo is a channelized river that runs south through the San Gabriel Valley toward its meeting with the Los Angeles River. Along much of its length it is lined with concrete and bordered by a bike path, and it passes under major streets such as Garvey Avenue on the line between Rosemead and El Monte. Both cities are older, largely working-class suburbs east of downtown Los Angeles, with modest homes, apartment buildings and commercial corridors along their main boulevards.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Jaime Rangel could be found in news archives or public records. More than 17 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew a 21-year-old named Jaime Rangel, who saw him in the days before Nov. 13, 2008, or who was near the Rio Hondo where it passes under Garvey Avenue at Lee Avenue around that time, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
