Summary based on 3 sources
Gabriel Rubio Resendiz, a 54-year-old man who lived in Gage Park on the city's Southwest Side, was beaten by a group of attackers on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, and died of his injuries more than five weeks later, on Saturday, December 19, 2020. The Chicago Police Department investigated. The Chicago Sun-Times homicide tracker, which lists every homicide in the city, records his case under the date of the attack.

Chicago police said Rubio Resendiz was assaulted on November 10 by three males at an unknown location. Police have not said what time the attack happened or what led up to it. He called for an ambulance the following day and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital. He was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, and on November 13 he was moved again, to Swedish Hospital. He died on December 19 at Seasons Hospice at Swedish Hospital, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Autopsy results released the next day ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple injuries from an assault.

The only description of the attackers that has been made public is that there were three of them and that they were male. No ages, clothing, vehicle or motive were released, and no arrest was reported. No reward tied to his case could be found. Because the place of the attack was never made public, witnesses may not have connected what they saw with his death.

Little about Gabriel Rubio Resendiz has entered the public record. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this account. His name follows the Spanish-language custom of two surnames, and he may appear in records as Gabriel Rubio, Gabriel Resendiz or Gabriel Rubio Resendiz. Searches for those names are dominated by other men, which makes it harder to trace the man who died in Chicago.

Gage Park is a largely Latino, working-class neighborhood of bungalows, two-flats and small storefronts on the Southwest Side, named for the park at its center. Anyone who saw a man being beaten by three others around November 10, 2020, or who saw a hurt man in Gage Park the following day, may hold an important piece of the story.

Gabriel Rubio Resendiz was one of about 780 people killed in Chicago in 2020, a sharp rise from about 500 the year before. Chicago police reported clearing roughly half of the city's homicides in those years, and that figure counts cases closed without anyone being charged. With so many killings to investigate, cases with few public details often faded from the news within days.

Cases like this can still be solved. In July 2021, Chicago police charged two people in the October 2020 stabbing of Sebastian Bobak in Humboldt Park, and a man in the November 2020 stabbing of Malcolm Mullins in Chatham, months after the first news reports had faded.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Gabriel Rubio Resendiz could be found in news archives or public records. More than 5 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew him and spoke with him between the attack and his death, or who heard talk of three men beating a man in November 2020, may be able to help. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a car seen leaving the area or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
