Jacob Holmes, 46, was fatally stabbed on the evening of Saturday, July 15, 2023, in the 4600 block of North Sheridan Road in Uptown, on Chicago's North Side. The Chicago Police Department investigated. The Chicago Sun-Times homicide tracker, which lists every homicide in the city, records his death as a stabbing.
According to Chicago police, the attack happened at about 7:40 p.m. Holmes was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with multiple stab wounds and later died, police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Police did not say whether he was attacked on the sidewalk or inside a building, whether an argument came first, or whether anyone else was hurt.
The only public report said that detectives were investigating. It did not mention anyone in custody, and no suspect description, motive, person of interest or reward was announced in any coverage that could be found.
No later story reported an arrest or a charge.
Almost nothing about his life has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this account. He surely had relatives, friends and neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record.
Jacob Holmes is also a fairly common name. Searches turn up college athletes, hockey players, business people and men involved in unrelated court cases in other states, along with obituaries for other men who share the name. That makes it harder to find any public trace of the man who died in Uptown, and may help explain why his story has been so hard to follow.
The timing stands out. On a Saturday evening in mid-July, it was still light in Chicago at 7:40 p.m., and the sidewalks along Sheridan Road are usually busy at that hour with residents, people heading to and from the lakefront, and riders using nearby bus and train lines. Someone in that crowd may have seen the attack or the person responsible leaving.
The 4600 block of North Sheridan Road sits at Wilson Avenue in Uptown, a lakefront community lined with high-rise and mid-rise apartment buildings, a few blocks east of the Wilson CTA Red Line station. Building doormen, residents looking out their windows and security cameras on the many apartment buildings along the corridor may have captured something that evening.
Chicago recorded about 620 homicides in 2023, down from about 720 in 2022 and about 800 in 2021, the deadliest year in a quarter century. Chicago police reported clearing roughly half of the city's homicides in the years from 2019 through 2023, though those figures count cases closed without charges. Most killings in those years were shootings, and deaths from stabbings and beatings often received only a few lines of news coverage before fading from view.
No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Jacob Holmes could be found in news archives or public records. More than 3 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew Jacob Holmes, or who was on Sheridan Road near Wilson Avenue that Saturday evening, may be able to help. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a person seen leaving the area or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
