Summary based on 3 sources
Walter McCalvin, 71, was beaten unconscious in the 1200 block of South St. Louis Street in North Lawndale, on Chicago's West Side, on Saturday, September 9, 2023. He died 10 days later, on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Mount Sinai Hospital. The Chicago Police Department investigated his death.

Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said he was found about 10:45 p.m. on September 9, although a summary line on the Sun-Times story described it as the morning of that day. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he remained for 10 days before he died. An autopsy released on September 20 found that he died from an assault and blunt-force trauma to his head, and his death was ruled a homicide. No one was in custody.

In December 2023, police asked the public for help finding his killer. They said McCalvin was near Fillmore and St. Louis in September when a man confronted him and hit him in the face with a blunt object. Cook County Crime Stoppers offered a cash reward of $15,000 for information leading to the killer. No description of the attacker, motive or vehicle was included in the public appeal, and police have not said whether anything was taken from him.

Little about his life has been made public. No obituary or family statement about him could be found in news coverage, and his family's grief has not entered the public record. At 71, he was far older than most homicide victims in Chicago, and a man of that age struck in the face on a neighborhood street was likely known to neighbors, shopkeepers and people who saw him regularly on those blocks.

That a reward was offered three months after his death suggests that detectives still had not identified the man who struck him by December. It also means someone who comes forward now may still be eligible to collect it.

North Lawndale is a West Side community area of two-flats, greystones and vacant lots, with Douglass Park to the north and Mount Sinai Hospital nearby. The blocks around St. Louis and Fillmore are residential where neighbors sit on porches in warm weather. A Saturday night in early September is a time when people are outside, and someone may have seen the confrontation or the man walking away.

Chicago recorded about 620 homicides in 2023, fewer than the roughly 780 in 2020 and about 800 in 2021, the deadliest year in a quarter century, but still far more than in most large American cities. Chicago police reported clearing roughly half of homicides in 2019 through 2023, though those figures count cases closed without charges. Many killings from those years remain without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Walter McCalvin could be found in news archives or public records. More than 3 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was near Fillmore and St. Louis that Saturday night, or who heard someone talk about hitting an older man there, may be able to help, and Cook County Crime Stoppers has offered up to $15,000 for information. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a car seen leaving the area or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
