Talisse Patterson, a 17-year-old student and athlete known for her kindness and radiant smile, was remembered by those who loved her as a light in their lives. A friend who knew her since the fifth grade described the young woman, nicknamed "Smiley," as "sunshine personified," someone who could brighten any room she entered. Her former middle school coach, Clifton Collins, recalled her as "one of those salt-of-the-earth type students" who was always quick to help others and keep her classmates in line. A talented track and field athlete at Riverside High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Talisse had a promising future ahead of her.

That future was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026. Talisse was with others waiting in line to enter a Halloween party at the Regency Inn on Arlington Expressway. At approximately 1:42 a.m., an argument broke out among another group of people nearby. The dispute escalated, and at least two individuals walked up to the area and began shooting into the crowd.

The gunfire that erupted was indiscriminate. When officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived at the chaotic scene, they found that three people had been shot. Talisse Patterson, who was not involved in the altercation, was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene. Two other bystanders were also wounded; one was transported to a hospital in stable condition, and the other drove themself to a local hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that all three victims were unintended targets. A nearby resident later described hearing a first burst of gunfire, followed by more shots.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit launched an immediate investigation into the senseless shooting. Investigators believe at least two suspects, described only as young men wearing dark clothing, approached the area on foot before opening fire. Due to the large number of people present at the time of the shooting, police have appealed to the public for any witnesses to come forward with firsthand information or cellphone video that could help them identify those responsible for Talisse’s death.

The news of Talisse’s death sent waves of shock and devastation through her community. Her former teachers at Springfield Middle School, where she had been coached by Collins for three years, were heartbroken. "Every teacher that I’ve talked to since I heard what happened has been very, very devastated that such a good, good person lost their life too soon," Collins said. Talisse's childhood friend, Tori LaRosa, was in disbelief, stating, “It's so unfair. She was seventeen. She was such a good person and she didn't deserve what happened to her.”

Tori’s mother, Keya LaRosa, remembered Talisse as a frequent and welcome visitor to their home and expressed the profound pain of watching her own daughter grieve such a loss. "This is so sad. Our children are dying over nonsense, over foolishness," she said. "Her name cannot go unnoticed. Her name should be spoken loudly." Coach Collins shared his sorrow, saying, “Our heart goes out to her family and anybody else that was involved.” He also spoke of using the tragedy to teach his current students about the importance of being aware of their surroundings and trusting their instincts.

As of the latest reports in November 2026, no arrests have been made in the killing of Talisse Patterson. The investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office remains active and ongoing. Authorities continue to ask anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS to remain anonymous.
