Cordell Roberson, a 28-year-old man from Lansing, Illinois, was known to friends and family by the nickname Corey. According to his social media, he had attended both Rich East High School in Park Forest and Thornton Township High School in Harvey. He lived on North Schultz Drive in Lansing, a village in Cook County just south of Chicago. Friends and family posted tributes to him on Facebook after his death, remembering the man they had lost so suddenly.
On the afternoon of November 3, 2026, Cordell drove his black Chrysler 300 to a Citgo gas station in Dolton, another south suburban village. He pulled up to a pump in the 14400 block of Lincoln Avenue, near the corner of Cottage Grove Avenue, at approximately 2:35 p.m. He was not alone in the car; an individual who police would later describe as the suspect was sitting in the front passenger seat.
What began as a routine stop at a gas station on a Tuesday afternoon quickly turned into a scene of deadly violence.
Security cameras at the Citgo station captured the shocking events that followed. At about 2:38 p.m., the front-seat passenger got out of the Chrysler. Instead of heading into the station or walking away, the person walked around the back of the car, approaching the driver's side where Cordell was seated behind the wheel. The individual then pulled a handgun from the pocket of a hoodie and fired at least four shots directly through the driver's side window. Cordell was struck by multiple bullets.
When Dolton Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found Cordell inside his car, suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in the nearby city of Harvey. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at 3:09 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his identity and ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Cordell Roberson’s murder was immediately launched by the Dolton Police Department. Given the serious nature of the crime, they were quickly joined by the Illinois State Police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. The task force is a specialized unit composed of investigators from dozens of municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies, designed to pool resources and expertise for complex and violent crimes like homicides. Investigators reviewed the surveillance footage from the gas station, which provided a clear, though disturbing, sequence of the shooting.
Despite the video evidence showing the killer's actions, authorities did not immediately release a description of the suspect or any further information to the public. The investigation was described as active and ongoing in the days following the shooting. "The Dolton Police Department remains committed to conducting a thorough investigation and working collaboratively with its law enforcement partners to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident," the department stated in a release.
As of the initial reports in November 2026, no arrests had been made, and no suspect information had been publicly released. The motive for the attack remains unknown, leaving Cordell's loved ones and the community with unanswered questions about why a passenger in his own car would turn on him in such a violent and final way. The case remains unsolved, and the investigation is in the hands of the joint task force.
