Nygel S. Gibbs, known to friends and family as Ny or Nyheim, was a 24-year-old Black man who stood 6'1" tall with a slim build, black hair, and brown eyes. His life was cut short in the winter of 2010, leaving behind a case that has puzzled investigators for years.
On the night of January 23, 2010, Nygel was at the Gin Mill Bar on Esquire Drive in Beavercreek, Ohio. According to witnesses and the subsequent investigation, an argument broke out inside the establishment between Nygel and an unknown young man. The tension did not dissipate, and when the bar closed for the night, the conflict moved outside into the parking lot.
The verbal altercation escalated into a gunfight. A chaotic scene unfolded as a total of nineteen shots were fired from two different caliber handguns. In the exchange of gunfire, three bullets struck Nygel, fatally wounding him.
Witnesses provided a description of the person Nygel had argued with.
They described him as a young Black male, approximately 18 to 20 years old, with a slender, athletic build and standing between 5'11" and 6'0" tall. A key detail supported the age estimate: the man had a large 'X' marked on his hand, a common practice for bars to identify underage patrons. After the shooting, the suspect was seen getting into a white or silver Ford Explorer, believed to be a late 1990s model, before fleeing the scene.
The Beavercreek Police Department investigated the homicide, pursuing several tips and leads that took them to the Dayton and Columbus areas. Despite their efforts, none of the information led to a breakthrough in the case. As of January 2010, the murder of Nygel Gibbs remains unsolved.
