In the early morning hours of October 20, 2013, Demetrius Broadnax, a 27-year-old Black male from Monroeville, Pennsylvania, was at the Diverse Banquet Hall in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He was attending a social event hosted by the New Brotherhood Motorcycle Club. Broadnax, a father and a member of the Ruff Ryders Motorcycle Club, was known by friends and family as a quiet and well-mannered person. A previous motorcycle accident had left him with paralysis on one side of his body.
