Do you know who murdered Zacharia Nahimana in 2019? Zacharia “Ocho” Nahimana, a 21-year-old Black man who was born in Tanzania, was living in Knoxville, Tennessee, when his life was cut short by violence in the early hours of June 9, 2019. While the city was still quiet, trouble erupted outside the Sunnight Lounge at 1045 Maryville Pike in South Knoxville. Police were called to the scene around 2:40 a.m. and arrived to find him gravely injured in the parking lot.
Paramedics rushed Nahimana to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with injuries described as life-threatening, but he did not survive. What began as a late-night outing near a club with a history of police attention became a homicide investigation. In the days that followed, investigators worked to identify who fired the shots and what led to the attack, but no suspect was publicly named.
Away from the headlines, the story of who he was came through in the remembrances shared after his death.
He had come to the United States with his family in February 2008 and attended Stone Mountain Middle School and Austin-East High School. He worked multiple jobs while trying to find the path that fit him best, and at the time of his passing he was employed at McDonald’s.
His family described him as someone whose presence could lift a room, a young man remembered for warmth, laughter, and the kind of smile that made other people feel seen. As loved ones gathered to mourn him and lay him to rest, the question of who was responsible for his death remained unanswered.
The case has remained active, but no arrests have been announced. It continues to be listed among Knoxville’s unsolved murders, signaling that detectives have not announced any charges, a trial, or a conviction connected to his killing.
