On January 4, 1977, Harry "The Horse" Flamburis, aged 37, was found murdered along with his girlfriend, Dannette Barrett, in their home in Daly City, California. Flamburis was the president of the San Francisco chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club. Both he and Barrett were bound and shot in the head in what appeared to be an execution-style killing.
The attackers also stole $22,000 worth of cocaine and a quantity of LSD from a safe in the house, suggesting the involvement of organized crime, potentially linked to internal conflicts within the Hells Angels or rivalries with other groups.
The crime scene and the nature of the murder pointed towards a premeditated act, possibly connected to tensions over Flamburis's resistance to the Hells Angels' increasing involvement in narcotics and prostitution racketeering. Following his death, Flamburis was laid to rest in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, California, on January 15, 1977. His funeral was attended by about 200 members of the Hells Angels and other motorcycle clubs from across the country. In a unique tribute, his Harley-Davidson motorcycle was buried with him three months later, in April 1977.
The brutal murder remains unsolved to this day. Despite investigations and suspicions regarding motives and individuals who might have been involved, no one has been formally charged with the killings. The home where Flamburis and Barrett were killed was burned down in an apparent act of arson a few months after the murders, further complicating the investigation and leaving many questions unanswered about what really happened and why.
