In the summer of 2023, the city of Birmingham, Alabama, was rocked by a brazen act of violence that claimed the life of one of its own first responders. Jordan Ellis Melton, a 29-year-old male firefighter, was on duty at Fire Station 9 in the Norwood neighborhood on July 12, 2023, when an unknown assailant entered the station's open bay and opened fire.
