On the night of March 3, 2021, a running vehicle sat long enough outside the Cloverdale Garden Apartments on Clarendon Avenue in Bessemer that it drew the attention of people nearby. When police arrived and checked the car, they found Shaquille O’Neil Steele, 27, a male from Bessemer, inside with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead from those injuries, and the scene around the parked, idling vehicle quickly shifted from uneasy curiosity to a homicide investigation.
