Armonda Contreras, a 43-year-old man, died on June 14, 2021, after a tense chain of events that began on Birmingham’s Parkway East and ended inside a small restaurant on 1st Avenue North. Police said officers noticed a pickup being driven on the wrong side of the road in the 9100 block and tried to stop it, but the driver kept going, drawing officers into a pursuit that rolled toward the city’s North East Lake area.
