On a spring evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Derek Jason Wright, a 39-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On April 20, 2023, Wright was riding his bicycle in the Thomas area of the city when he was fatally shot. First responders from Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene on 13th Street West near 11th Court West to find him unresponsive. Despite their efforts, Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.
