In the fading light of a Sunday evening in Washington, D.C., a routine patrol turned into the discovery of a grim scene. On December 28, 2014, in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue, SE, a Metropolitan Police Department officer happened upon a car that was the centerpiece of a double homicide. Just before 10 p.m., the officer found 71-year-old Preston Cornelius Johnson Sr. of Capitol Heights, Maryland, lying on the ground outside the vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
