Willie Gray, 34, a Black/African American man from Montgomery, was killed late on the night of March 28, 2023, after gunfire erupted on the 5100 block of Carmichael Road, just inside the bypass. Police were called to the scene at about 11 p.m., and when officers arrived they found him with fatal gunshot injuries. He was pronounced dead there, turning an ordinary stretch of roadway into the center of a homicide investigation and leaving his death to echo through Montgomery in the days that follow
