In the early morning hours of September 23, 2017, the life of 22-year-old Dre'van LaQuez Jones, a Black male, was cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. Jones was discovered inside a white pickup truck in the 100 block of 9th Avenue West, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Birmingham Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into the fatal shooting.
