In the spring of 2017, the community of Leeds, Alabama, was shaken by the tragic death of 12-year-old Kayla Mendenhall. A sixth-grade student at Leeds Middle School, Kayla was known for her bright smile and positive attitude. She was an active member of her school community, where she played the trombone in the school band. Her teachers and classmates remembered her as a wonderful student who was never in trouble and had a talent for brightening any room she entered.
