On September 22, 2009, Josie N. "Shea" Grimmett, a 33-year-old African American woman from Birmingham, Alabama, was fatally shot during a violent incident that shocked her community. The shooting occurred at a residence in the 2500 block of 11th Avenue North, a residential area in Birmingham. Emergency responders arrived at the scene after reports of gunfire and found Grimmett with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to administer life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
