In the fall of 1981, a Bessemer police officer's life was tragically cut short, leaving a lasting impact on his community. Tommy L. Thedford, a 37-year-old Black/African American male, served on the Bessemer Police Department for 12 years. On October 1, 1981, while on duty, he was involved in a stakeout at 31st Street and Dartmouth Avenue, assisting two women in the recovery of stolen jewelry.
