In the year 1927, a male Birmingham Police Officer by the name of Ray Payne, at the age of 27, was killed in the line of duty. His death came about when he intervened in a physical altercation involving three men. During his attempt to quell the disturbance, one of the individuals produced a firearm and fatally shot him.
