Enos L. “Bud” McCracken, a 44-year-old man, was the sheriff of Barber County, Kansas, when a warrant turned into a killing on the night of March 19, 1908. Contemporary accounts place the shooting in Kiowa, Kansas, not Kiowa City, Alabama.
