Melvin Bautista “Inong” Santos, a 24-year-old man from Kahului, died in the early hours of July 25, 2016, after violence erupted at a Kea Street home where people regularly gathered for late-night card games. He had been born in the Philippines and built a life on Maui, working in local kitchens and leaning into cooking as both a craft and a future he was trying to protect.
That night, after the game ended, Santos and others were still at the house cleaning up when the calm snapped.
