On September 21, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at Eddie Lee Taylor Park in Melbourne, Florida, resulting in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Devon L. Lakes of Palm Bay. The shooting took place at approximately 7:24 p.m. near the entrance of the park, where a large crowd had gathered for youth football games and a memorial gathering for another local coach, Craig Dewberry, who had been murdered just 11 days earlier on September 10, 2024.
The incident began when an altercation stemmed from a prior confrontation between Michael Lakes, Devon's brother, and the suspect, Andrew A. Guzman. According to reports, Michael had informed his mother and Devon about a fight he had with Guzman and wanted to leave the area. Devon decided to accompany his brother to ensure his safety. However, Guzman confronted the unarmed brothers and opened fire, fatally striking Devon in the chest and critically injuring Michael.
Devon was immediately transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center (HRMC) but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival despite life-saving efforts. Michael was rushed to the hospital by a friend and remains in critical condition. The shooting sent the crowd into chaos, with many spectators and children fleeing the scene.
The Melbourne Police Department launched an investigation, interviewing witnesses and reviewing footage from security cameras around the park. Guzman fled the scene in a red vehicle, which was captured on security cameras and later identified through a license plate database. On September 22, 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for Guzman, who has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was apprehended without incident at a relative’s home in Palm Bay on September 23, 2024.
Guzman is facing charges of 1st Degree Premeditated Murder with a Firearm, Attempted 1st Degree Premeditated Murder, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The police have confirmed that the shooting is not linked to the earlier murder of Craig Dewberry. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
