On August 25, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at the Palmetto Estuary Nature Preserve in Palmetto, Florida. Manuel Escobar, a 32-year-old man from Bradenton, Florida, was found dead in the trunk of a car. The discovery was made by Palmetto police officers who were on patrol at the nature preserve, located at 101 U.S. 41, around 2 a.m.
Investigations revealed that Escobar had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting did not occur at the nature preserve but rather in the 2800 block of 5th Street East in Bradenton. After the shooting, Escobar's body was transported and left in an abandoned car at the estuary park.
The incident was linked to an argument over money involving Escobar and two other individuals, 25-year-old Freddy Sandoval and 20-year-old Idus Murkerson. Detectives developed probable cause to arrest Sandoval in connection with the shooting. An arrest warrant was issued for Murkerson, who was later apprehended by the Florida Highway Patrol in Santa Rosa County on Monday morning.
Authorities believe that the three individuals had a pre-arranged meeting, during which a transaction took place, leading to the altercation and subsequent shooting. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has stated that this was an isolated incident.
The arrests of Sandoval and Murkerson brought some resolution to the case, but the community remains affected by the violent nature of the crime. The investigation highlighted the importance of thorough police work in identifying and apprehending suspects involved in such serious crimes.
