On April 17, 2024, Yasmin Grijalva, a 35-year-old woman, was fatally shot by her husband, Devin Hansen, during an argument at his parents' home in St. Petersburg, Florida. The couple, who had been married for three years and resided out of state (Hansen in Virginia and Grijalva in Michigan with their one-year-old son), were visiting relatives in St. Petersburg when the incident occurred.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found Grijalva critically injured.
As she was being transported to Orlando Health Bayfront in an ambulance, Hansen, who had already fled the scene in a black Cadillac CTS, began chasing the ambulance on the interstate. Police officers in the area initiated a pursuit, but Hansen continued to drive, eventually crashing the Cadillac into large landscaping rocks in a residential area in the 1400 block of 54th Avenue South.
Hansen was arrested at the scene of the crash. Grijalva was pronounced dead at the hospital. Following his arrest, Hansen was charged with first-degree murder, fleeing and eluding, and misdemeanor domestic battery. This incident was described by the St. Petersburg Police Department as unusual, noting that while suspects might sometimes show up at the hospital or try to intervene later, actively pursuing an ambulance is a rare occurrence.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and there is a possibility of additional charges being filed against Hansen. The couple's one-year-old son was not present at the time of the shooting, as Grijalva had come to St. Petersburg for a work event or conference, and Hansen had joined her there.
