Jann Michael Feeney, a 17-year-old from Bradenton, Florida, tragically passed away on March 8, 2024, in an accidental shooting. The incident occurred while he and several teenagers were gathered in the backyard of a residence. According to authorities, a firearm discharged, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound to Jann. Despite immediate efforts by deputies and emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of another 17-year-old, Carter Layne, who was charged with manslaughter with a firearm. Alcohol was reportedly present at the gathering, and the case remains under review as detectives continue to gather additional information from witnesses.
Jann, affectionately known as "JM" by his family and friends, was a dedicated junior at Manatee High School and a talented wrestler with a deep passion for the sport. He began wrestling through youth programs on Anna Maria Island and continued to excel at the high school level. Outside of school, he worked at the Beach House Waterfront Restaurant, where he was cherished by coworkers for his positive spirit, strong work ethic, and sportsmanship. His colleagues and the local community rallied to support his family, raising over $30,000 through a GoFundMe campaign.
A celebration of Jann's life was held on March 16 at The Center of Anna Maria Island, where loved ones remembered his vibrant personality and future aspirations. His untimely death has left a significant impact on those who knew him, emphasizing the tragic consequences of firearms in social settings and prompting calls for greater safety measures in similar situations.
