On December 2, 2023, 18-year-old white male Jacob Michael Farrell was fatally shot in Apopka, Florida. The incident occurred in the backyard of his family's home, where Jacob was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. His mother, Melissa Farrell, attempted to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The shooter was identified as 16-year-old Arden Xavier Torres, a longtime friend and next-door neighbor of Jacob.
According to Jacob's parents, they had cautioned him about Torres, perceiving him as troubled, but Jacob believed in his friend's goodness. Torres was arrested and charged as an adult with manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a minor. He was held on a $100,000 bond, which was later upheld despite attempts to have it reduced.
In May 2025, Torres accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to five years in prison followed by two years of supervised probation. The plea agreement sparked outrage from Jacob's family, who felt the sentence was too lenient for the loss they endured. During the sentencing, Torres expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to Jacob's parents and acknowledging the pain he caused.
Jacob Farrell was a Lake Brantley High School graduate known for his kindness and generosity. He had chosen to be an organ donor, and his organs saved four lives after his death. His family and friends remember him as someone who always saw the good in people and had a profound impact on those around him.
