Roovens Pierre, a 30-year-old resident of Ocala, Florida, succumbed to his injuries after being shot on July 1, 2023. The incident occurred on a street in northwest Ocala, an area that has seen a significant rise in gun-related violence in recent months.
Pierre's death was part of a series of tragic events that have affected the Marion County community. Earlier in the year, on New Year's Day, there were two shooting deaths on Southwest 5th Street.
In the following months, several other shooting homicides took place, including the deaths of Ajike “A.J.” Owens on June 2, 17-year-old Lezarius “Lee” Graham on June 7, and 18-year-old Tylique Le’John Christie shortly after.
The community's response to these tragedies included a prayer walk organized by the local anti-gun violence group War Cry 4 Peace. This event, held on July 6, 2023, aimed to bring attention to the issue of gun violence and seek justice, closure, unity, change, and peace for the community. Participants, including relatives of the victims, marched through northwest Ocala, carrying signs with images of loved ones and messages against gun violence.
