Maurice Harris, age 36, was tragically killed on February 12, 2013, during a home invasion at his residence in Model City, Miami. The incident occurred just before midnight, when two armed intruders broke into his home, demanding cash. Maurice, despite suffering from Lupus, fought back courageously to protect his family. When the intruders attempted to enter his 11-year-old daughter's bedroom, Maurice confronted them in a desperate attempt to prevent them from harming her.
During the ensuing struggle, he was shot multiple times. The intruders, who had bandanas covering their faces, fled the scene after the shooting.
Maurice was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police believe Maurice may have been followed home earlier that day, although they found no personal connection between him and the intruders. The Miami Police Department described the assailants as "beasts" and emphasized Maurice's bravery in trying to save his daughter. Neighbors and friends hailed Maurice as a hero for his actions, and his death has left a significant impact on his family and community. He is survived by his wife, Shakila Stewart, an 11-year-old daughter, and a 15-year-old son. Maurice's family described him as a devoted father and husband, highlighting his past struggles but also his commitment to his loved ones and their safety.
The police have asked anyone with information regarding this tragic incident to come forward to help identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime. Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for any information that could lead to an arrest in the case. Maurice's family, friends, and community members continue to hope for justice to be served for this courageous "super dad" who gave his life defending his family.
