On what should have been a night of celebration, 20-year-old Imani Williams, a Black female, was tragically killed on May 12, 2023, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Southern University student was out celebrating her 20th birthday with a friend, Ja'Diamond Jones, also 20 years old. The two young women were leaving a hookah lounge in the Treme neighborhood when they were both fatally shot. Williams was struck by multiple bullets and died at the scene.
