On January 3, 2008, Alexio Bello, aged 66, was found murdered in his Miami apartment by his housekeeper. Bello's body was discovered in his ransacked condominium, located in the 5500 block of Northwest 7th Street. He had been stabbed to death, and evidence at the scene indicated a violent struggle. The housekeeper also found a pair of bloody shoes near Bello's body, which were later identified as belonging to Jorge Espinoza Navarrete, a young homeless man whom Bello had taken in shortly before
the incident.
Navarrete, who was originally from Mexico, had recently moved to Miami from Georgia and the Carolinas. The investigation quickly zeroed in on Navarrete due to the DNA evidence and a bloody fingerprint that linked him to the crime. An arrest warrant was eventually issued for Navarrete, though by that time, he had disappeared, and authorities considered him a dangerous individual who might still be in the South Florida area. Investigators believe that Navarrete may have targeted Bello, possibly motivated by the vulnerable circumstances of the victim, who was identified as a gay man.
