On December 2, 2023, at approximately 12:10 a.m., Columbus police officers responded to a reported shooting in the 2000 block of Cornell Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 46-year-old Malik Islam lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:26 a.m. Initial investigations indicated that Islam was conversing with the suspect when he was shot.
