Kevin Harvey, a 27-year-old Black man, was a resident of Moss Point, Mississippi, who had attended Moss Point High School. Born in Fort Hood, Texas, he was remembered by those who knew him as the "sweetest person ever" and a "good dude all around." He was just weeks away from celebrating his 28th birthday when his life was cut short.
Late on the night of August 10, 2023, an attack unfolded at Harvey’s home on Ruby Street. According to the Moss Point Police Chief, the incident began around 11:45 p.m. as an attempted home invasion. Investigators believe that when two or three unknown suspects failed to get inside the residence, they opened fire through the door with an unidentified type of rifle. Harvey was struck several times and died at the scene.
The barrage of gunfire terrified neighbors. One couple, Sharmenida Simmons and Cory Salter, dropped to their floor to hide as the shots rang out.
They later discovered a bullet lodged in their bedroom wall, just feet from where they had been sitting. Another neighbor’s car, parked outside, was also struck by a bullet that went through both windows. Investigators reportedly recovered about 100 bullet shells from the neighbors' property alone, and at least 10 bullet holes were counted in the door and windows of Harvey's home.
Moss Point police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that Harvey's home was targeted for an unknown reason. The only description of the suspects is two to three individuals who may have been wearing face coverings. Neighbors told reporters they did not hear a car and believe the perpetrators fled on foot. As of August 2023, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved.
