On the night of September 3, 2024, Kansas City police officers patrolling near 55th Street and Prospect Avenue heard gunshots around 11:30 p.m. Upon investigation, they discovered 39-year-old Shroy Lapsely and an unidentified woman at the intersection of 55th Street and South Benton Avenue, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Research Medical Center, where Lapsely was pronounced dead around 1 a.m. on September 4. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries
