In the winter of 2023, the life of 51-year-old Michelle Anne Trout was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded on the evening of January 11th in the parking lot of a Best Western Hotel located in Washington, Missouri. Another individual, a man, was also injured during the event and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a primary suspect: Michelle's estranged husband, Powell Trout Jr., who was 61 years old at the time. The couple had a strained relationship, and court records indicated that he had filed for divorce in November of the preceding year. Since the divorce filing, Michelle had been residing in various hotels in the area. Authorities believe that on the day of the shooting, the two had been in communication.

Following the incident, he was taken into custody by the Washington Police Department. Prosecutors formally charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with his estranged wife's death.
In April 2025, Powell Trout, then 64, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife. The tragic event left Michelle's three children and two grandchildren to mourn her loss. Her family held private funeral services to honor her memory.
