On May 21, 2023, 41-year-old Christopher Lee Smith of Madison, North Carolina, was found deceased in the parking lot of Ramon's Shell & Foodmart on US Highway 220. A store clerk discovered his body around 7:15 a.m., and upon arrival, Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies determined that Smith had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
