On August 26, 2024, at approximately 3:42 p.m., Santa Ana Police officers responded to reports of a shooting near 800 S. Townsend Street, just east of Monte Vista Elementary School. Upon arrival, they discovered 32-year-old Santa Ana resident, Erick Alegria, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention from the Orange County Fire Authority, Alegria was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
In the months following the incident, Santa Ana Police Department's Homicide Detectives conducted an extensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for Alegria's death. On December 17, 2024, authorities announced the arrest of Ruben Oswaldo Cielo in connection with the homicide. Cielo has been charged, and law enforcement continues to seek additional suspects involved in the case. The police have urged anyone with further information to come forward to aid in bringing all responsible parties to justice.
The area surrounding Monte Vista Elementary School has been the focus of increased police presence and community concern following the shooting. The Santa Ana Police Department has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and has implemented measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
