On June 9, 2024, 21-year-old San Pedro resident Jose Anthony Monge was fatally shot on a sidewalk in the 400 block of West Oliver Street. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene around 10:30 a.m., where Monge was pronounced dead.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified Monge and determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds, ruling the manner of death as homicide.
Authorities believe the shooting was gang-related. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made, and no suspect information is available. The LAPD has urged anyone with information about the case to contact them at 877-LAPD-247.
Prior to his death, Monge had a history of arrests. In May 2022, he was arrested in Los Angeles County for warrants or holds only. He faced a similar arrest in September 2022.
The community has expressed grief over Monge's death, with 277 candles lit in his memory on an online memorial dedicated to gun violence victims.
