On February 5, 2024, 59-year-old Jonathan Mauk of Highland, California, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a local Walmart following a minor vehicle collision. Mauk, a father of three and grandfather of two, had visited the store around 8 p.m. to purchase ingredients for his homemade beef jerky. While searching for a parking spot, his vehicle lightly collided with another car driven by 37-year-old Shawntece Marie Norton.
Witnesses reported that Mauk exited his vehicle to apologize for the minor accident, which resulted in only a scratch on his car's fender. As he approached, Norton allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot Mauk in the face before fleeing the scene. Emergency responders pronounced Mauk dead at the location.
Authorities apprehended Norton approximately 12 hours after the incident at a nearby apartment complex. An unregistered firearm, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, was recovered during her arrest. Norton was charged with murder, including special allegations of personal and intentional use of a firearm. She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was held without bail pending further court proceedings.
Mauk's family and friends remembered him as a generous individual with a passion for classic cars, working at Carey's Fine Automobiles in San Bernardino. His son, Matthew, expressed disbelief over the senselessness of the act, noting that his father would have readily offered assistance to anyone in need. A GoFundMe campaign was established to help cover funeral expenses, reflecting the community's support for the grieving family.
