On December 18, 2023, Earl Smith, a 59-year-old resident of Hawthorne, California, was fatally shot in the 13400 block of Kornblum Avenue. Hawthorne Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:04 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith and another man suffering from gunshot wounds. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, while the second victim was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
