On November 6, 2023, at approximately 3:00 AM, 50-year-old Sergio Martin was found deceased in his Dinuba, California, home, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. A neighbor had requested a welfare check, leading authorities to the scene. Martin, a dedicated Spanish teacher at El Monte Middle School in Orosi, was well-regarded in the community.
Following an extensive investigation, authorities arrested a 16-year-old male juvenile on April 24, 2024.
Charged with murder, burglary, and firearm-related offenses, the juvenile was arraigned in Tulare County Juvenile Court. Due to his age at the time of the crime, he cannot be tried as an adult under California law.
Additionally, two adult suspects were apprehended: 21-year-old Jorge Arrieta and 20-year-old Joseph Garcia. Both faced charges of felony second-degree burglary and felony accessory after the fact, with Arrieta also charged with misdemeanor receiving stolen property. They were arrested on April 26, 2024, with Arrieta remaining in custody and Garcia posting bail.
In December 2024, the 16-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to the murder of Sergio Martin. He was sentenced to the maximum term of seven years in juvenile custody, which includes time served. Under juvenile law, he can be held until the age of 25, with potential release earlier based on behavior and rehabilitation progress.
