On October 8, 2023, at approximately 11:57 PM, Santa Ana Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision in the 2300 block of West 5th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 26-year-old Santa Ana resident Gonzalo Carlos inside the vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Despite immediate medical assistance, Carlos was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Fire Authority.
The initial investigation indicated that Carlos had been shot, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a fence. The incident was not believed to be gang-related. Detectives from the Santa Ana Police Department's Homicide Section conducted a thorough investigation to identify potential witnesses and gather evidence.
On December 6, 2023, detectives arrested 22-year-old Adrian Ayala of Santa Ana in connection with the homicide. Two days later, the Orange County District Attorney's Office filed a felony complaint against Ayala, charging him with murder under California Penal Code 187(a), along with associated aggravating counts related to the crime. Ayala remains in custody awaiting trial.
