On September 10, 2023, at approximately 12:28 a.m., 17-year-old John Avery Davis was fatally shot during a large party in the 2300 block of Westhaven Avenue, near Hughes Lane, in south Bakersfield, California. Responding to reports of a shooting, officers from the Bakersfield Police Department arrived to find both Davis and a 16-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds.
