On the evening of July 14, 2023, at approximately 8:24 p.m., 28-year-old Jose Juarez of Delano, California, was fatally shot alongside 28-year-old Joshua Pena of Bakersfield. The incident occurred at the On the Way Gas Station located at 2241 Girard Street in Delano. A Delano police officer, engaged in a nearby traffic stop, reported hearing gunshots and observed a vehicle speeding away from the gas station. The officer initiated a pursuit, which concluded when the suspect vehicle crashed and became disabled in unincorporated Kern County. Three individuals were taken into custody following the crash.

Surveillance footage from the gas station revealed that an argument had ensued between multiple gang members, initially suggesting a potential fistfight. However, the situation escalated when a man exited the driver's side of a Dodge Ram, retrieved a firearm from his waistband, and opened fire on Juarez and Pena. Both victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of 19-year-old Bryan Heredia and 20-year-old Saul Ochoa, both residents of Delano. They were charged with first-degree murder, gang conspiracy, and other felony offenses. A third suspect, 24-year-old Rito Castillo, was apprehended on July 20 at a Chick-fil-A on Rosedale Highway in Bakersfield. Authorities have indicated that no additional suspects are outstanding in connection with this case.

The Delano Police Department has extended its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Jose Juarez and Joshua Pena during this difficult time. The department continues to investigate the incident and has urged anyone with further information to contact Detective Santaella at (661) 721-3369.
