On June 15, 2023, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Salinas Police Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire in the 700 block of Garner Avenue in Salinas, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 36-year-old Luis Florez Gonzalez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite officers' attempts at life-saving measures, Gonzalez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Following an intensive investigation, authorities identified 30-year-old Miguel Angel Alvarenga as the primary suspect in the shooting. On June 29, 2023, Alvarenga was apprehended during a traffic stop near John Street and Work Street in Salinas. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into the Monterey County Jail.
The Salinas Police Department has indicated that there are no additional suspects in this case.
