On the morning of June 8, 2023, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a shooting occurred near the intersection of Geneva and Lorena Avenues in southwest Fresno. Officers responding to a ShotSpotter activation found 43-year-old Ibrahim Muhammad and a 57-year-old woman with gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where Muhammad succumbed to his injuries. The female victim was listed in critical but stable condition.
Investigators determined that Muhammad was the intended target, while the woman was an unintended victim standing nearby. Initially, there was no suspect information, prompting detectives to canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage.
Through their investigation, detectives identified 27-year-old Malik Nichols as the suspect. Nichols, an active gang member on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, was already in custody at the Fresno County Jail for an unrelated shooting. On July 31, 2023, he was additionally charged with Muhammad's murder and the shooting of the female victim.
